Green Tea Component Has Potential To Against HIV Infection

A chemical that occurs naturally in green tea appears to prevent HIV-1 (the virus associated with AIDS) from infecting cells in the immune system and could prove a valuable part of treatment for the disease, said researchers from Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital.

In previous studies Dr. Christina Nance and Dr. William T. Shearer had demonstrated that epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, found in green tea, blocks the ability of HIV-1 to attach to a cellular entry molecule called gp120. This inhibits the virus' ability to infect cells.

"Now we have shown that EGCG can inhibit infection not only in a specific strain of HIV but in multiple subtypes and strains," Nance said. "This is paramount from a global aspect. Most initial studies with HIV in the Americas are based on subtype B." However, most of the world is infected with other strains.

"Previously, we had shown how it worked. This is definitive proof that the compound inhibits actual HIV infection in lymphocytes or T-cells.

In this study, they exposed immune cells from the blood of people who did not have HIV/AIDS to the virus in the laboratory. They then incubated these HIV infected immune cells with EGCG. They found that the compound blocked the ability of the virus to infect other cells.

Molecular components of the compound called pryogallol and galloyl appear to be responsible for the prevention of the gp120 protein from attaching to the CD4 molecule found on T-cells, a key component of the immune systems.

This effect occurs at concentrations that would be non-toxic to people.

"Thus, EGCG may represent a potential low-cost inhibitor of global HIV infection that could be used at least as adjunctive anti HIV therapy."

Previous drugs developed to block the entry of HIV into cells proved ineffective because the virus mutated.

"Once HIV is exposed to drug, it finds a way around it," said Nance. She said she hopes that EGCG, derived from a natural product, will be less likely to generate such mutations. Currently, she is doing tests to determine whether EGCG will generate such resistant mutations.

That preliminary work could help clear the way for early patient studies, she said. BCM has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to being a phase 1 trial to study the safety of the compound in HIV infected people.

Researchers Find Drinking Green Tea Boosts The Health Of Blood Vessels Within Minutes

People who make green tea a regular part of their lifestyle may significantly reduce their risk of death from heart disease and colorectal cancer.Drinking green tea rapidly improves the health of the delicate cells lining the blood vessels and helps lower one's risk of heart disease.

Researchers writing in the latest issue of the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation have found that people who drink green tea have better blood vessel function just 30 minutes later. Specifically, green tea improves the function of endothelial cells. Endothelial cell dysfunction plays a key role in the development of clogged arteries, a process called atherosclerosis.

The finding adds to a growing body of evidence that suggests that powerful antioxidants in green tea called flavonoids may protect the heart. Other flavonoid-rich foods include red grapes, red wine, and dark chocolate. The study authors say their results are the first to show that green tea offers a short-term improvement in the health of arteries. Black tea has previously been linked to short- and long-term improvements in endothelial function.

For the study, Nikolaos Alexopoulos and colleagues at the Athens Medical School in Greece randomly assigned 14 healthy volunteers approximately 30 years of age to a cup of green tea, a beverage containing the same amount of caffeine as green tea, or hot water on three separate occasions.

The researchers used a technique called flow-mediated dilation (FMD) to measure blood flow in each participant's arm at 30, 90, and 120 minutes after they drank their beverage. FMD is a noninvasive test that uses a blood pressure cuff and ultrasound to see how blood flows in the brachial artery when the arm is gently squeezed. The brachial artery runs from the shoulder to the elbow. The artery should get wider when blood flow in the area increases, but diseases such as atherosclerosis hamper this effect. FMD is an independent predictor of endothelial function and heart disease risk.

The key to the secret of green tea’s positive impact on heart disease and colorectal cancer may be the high levels of polyphenols (30 to 40 percent) found in green tea, compared with only 3 to 10 percent found in black tea. Polyphenols are chemical substances, found in plants, that have antioxidant properties. The four main polyphenols in tea leaves are epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epicatechin (EC).

After drinking green tea, the subjects experienced significantly increased artery widening (dilation), with the highest increase noted at 30 minutes. The caffeinated beverage and hot water did not produce any significant changes in the same individuals.

How Many More Calories can You Burn by Drinking Green Tea?

Green tea can help you lose weight in many ways. The two most important pathways are through fat burning (called beta oxidation) and increasing metabolism (called thermogenesis). In this article, you will find out just how many more calories you can burn by consuming green tea.

According to Dr. Swen Wolfram, author of Anti-obesity effects of green tea, there have been 9 human trials conducted on the anti-obesity benefits of green tea. Two of the studies use metabolic chamber for measuring energy usage, and so provide credible insights into its metabolism boosting effects.

Green Tea Metabolism Study #1: University of Geneva 1999 Study

In 1999, Dr. Dulloo from the University of Geneva conducted a ground-breaking study in which 10 men were given one of the following 3 times a day:

*Green tea extract consisting of 50 milligram caffeine and 90 milligram epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) - green tea's most active antioxidant.
*50 milligrams of caffeine
*Placebo

Dr. Dulloo discovered that consuming the green tea extract resulted in an increase of 4% in 24 hour energy usage. Just taking the caffeine in amounts equivalent to those found in the green tea extract had no effect on metabolism.

The researchers concluded that green tea boosts energy usage and promotes fat burning beyond that explained by its caffeine content.

Green Tea Metabolism Study #2: Beltsville HNRC 2001 Study

This study was conducted by Dr. William Rumpler on 12 healthy male adults over 3 days. Unlike the previous study, the participants drank the beverage instead of consuming tea extract. They were divided into 4 groups, with each group given either

*Caffeinated water (270 milligrams)
*Full strength oolong tea (270 milligrams caffeine, 244 milligrams EGCG)
*Half strength oolong tea (122 milligrams EGCG)
*Water

The caffeinated water contained 270 milligrams of caffeine. The full strength oolong tea contained 244 milligrams of EGCG and the same amount of caffeine.

The scientists discovered that the caffeinated water increased energy usage by 3.4% compared to water over 24 hours. Full strength tea increased metabolism by 2.9%.

The half-strength tea did not significantly increase metabolism when compared to plain water.

Conclusion

According to a rule of thumb, you should consume at least 10 calories per pound of your ideal weight. So if you are aiming for a weight of 150 pounds, you should consume 1,500 calories a day.

Now here comes the problem. You and I probably consume far more calories than we realise. Most of these calories are found in fat, which makes up 40% of an American's diet (a balanced diet should contain 15% fat by calorie count). These fats are found everywhere: butter, vegetable oil, salad dressing, lean cut meat, seafood etc.

This is where green tea metabolism kicks in. If you burn 2,000 calories a day, this translates to a saving of 80 calories, or 8 pounds a year, not bad for just a few cups of soothing tea! After a few years, each little cup adds up to a gigantic slimming effect.
